For the uninitiated, sandboxing is a way of cutting off suspected apps and files from the rest of the computer so if they are malicious they won’t be able to affect other apps within the computer. Unlike Returnil, which places a virtual layer over your whole PC, sandboxing all changes made; then it dumps all the changes upon reboot, BufferZone only sandboxes different parts of your computer from where a threat can emerge, such as your Internet browser or P2P program. All the changes made to these programs are kept in a “virtual zone” as explained in the image below
If you inadvertently download a virus, for example, and it attempts to modify the registry or copy itself to your hard disk, the virus will think that those operations have succeeded whereas, in fact, no registry amendments have been made and no files have been created. BufferZone is available as both a free version and also as BufferZone Pro. The “Pro” version has additional features and normally costs $39.95 for a one-year license. However, until the end of this year, Trustware is giving away the software for free. So head over to Trustware and get a year’s worth of protection for nothing!
Version being given out for free: v3.41-14 Supported OS: Windows XP/Vista/Win7 (32-bit only) [via]dotTech
