That’s exactly the purpose of Doob3D, a Germany-based company which thinks it can get consumers interested in ordering a 3D-printed figure of themselves and have it delivered at their doors. The company has four 3-D scanning booths in different locations throughout the world – Dusseldorf, Tokyo, Santa Monica Place in Los Angeles and one in New York City’s Chelsea Market. And it seems that their business is booming, as they are set to open new locations in the United States in the near future. So, this is how it works like this – you step into a 3D-scanning booth, called a ‘Doob-licator’ and it captures a 3D version of you. For this, it uses a lot of hardware and software: 54 DSLRs, 54 lenses, a complex 3-D modeling pipeline, and an $80,000 full-color 3-D printer. The full-body scan takes only a fraction of a second. However, the printing process takes a few hours for the smallest-size statue and half a day or more for the larger ones. To get your replica, it can take between two and eight weeks. For $95, you will get a 3D printed version of yourself that’s about the size of most classic Star Wars action figures. A 10-inch model goes for $395 and a 14-inch figure costs $695. And if you really have enough money, you should know that a life-size statue can cost up to $75,000. So, start saving up money and maybe in a couple of years, you will be able to afford a 3D printed clone of yourself. Or, you could just take $100 and make your buddy a really nice surprise.
