A few leaks recently suggested that Huawei might release a phone with a huge display size of 6.9-inches. The device speculated to be using this display was the Huawei Mate 20 Pro as the release dates of the phone as well as the availability of the large display panels coincided. To accommodate such a large display on a smartphone and to reduce its overall footprint, Huawei might be using their patented display technology.

The patent that was approved on June 7, 2018 has a description that states that it is difficult to design a smartphone with extremely slim bezels using the current frame technology. Hence, Huawei engineers have decided to employ an alternate method which makes use of metal strips instead of the regular frame. The metal strips are glued to the housing of the device by using double-sided adhesive tape or glue. It is done in such a professional manner that it makes the device waterproof, dustproof and anti-static, enabling Huawei to achieve an IPXX certification for the device as well. The touchscreen that has recessed portions on the top and bottom is placed in the housing, resulting in a smartphone with extremely thin top and bottom bezels while the side bezels on the device are non-existent. It’s interesting to note that this ‘leak’ comes just hours before Huawei’s Chinese competitor, Oppo, took wraps off the Oppo Find X smartphone with a screen-to-body ratio of 92.25%. This kind of technology can be used to create a smartphone that features a similar body to the recently launched Vivo Nex smartphones but sports an even bigger display. Will this technology be used in the upcoming Huawei Mate 20 Pro? Or will it be reserved for a more premium Porsche Edition smartphone from Huawei? We just have to wait and watch.
